Scots born, I began my career as a cellist and teacher before undertaking a 3 year apprenticeship in the making of early stringed instruments at West Dean College in West Sussex. On graduating, I continued my apprenticeship for a further 3 years with a successful violin maker and restorer in Cambridgeshire.
I returned to Scotland in 2005 and opened my own workshop in Glasgow city centre. There I built a loyal and varied clientele of musicians and dealers over the years with customers from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Royal Scottish Conservatoire and many renowned folk musicians. My reputation has attracted customers from all over Scotland, the UK and overseas.
In 2015 I moved to Kirkcudbright to raise my family and open a new studio in the beautiful surroundings of Dumfries & Galloway.
I am a member of the British Violin Makers Association.
