About me
I was born and bred in Ayr, Scotland and it was in the strong musical traditions of this area that my talent as a cellist was nurtured. On completing my degree in music I moved to London where I worked for several years as a freelance player and teacher.
During my years as a cellist I visited many violin restorers and developed a fascination for the trade. A chance meeting with a London violin dealer offered me the opportunity to involve further in the business. I worked front of house for Bridgewood & Neitzert before undertaking a 3 year apprenticeship in the making of early instruments at West Dean College in Sussex with Roger Rose.
On leaving West Dean I continued my apprenticeship for a further 3 years with a successful violin maker and restorer in Cambridgeshire. I returned to Scotland in 2005 to start my own workshop.
Although viol making remains close to my heart, I spend most of my time restoring and repairing for my many customers in Glasgow and Ayrshire. I am a member of the British Violin Makers Association.
