Early and period instruments

In addition to working on violins, violas, and cellos I also work on early and period instruments,viols in particular as they were my original speciality. Typical repairs include restoring an instrument with a modern set up back to its original Baroque set up, tonal adjustments and replacing frets.


Restoration & repair

The aim of my workshop is to carry out sympathetic restorations and repairs, to work closely with musicians to achieve a result they are happy with while preserving the integrity of the instrument. Restoration and conservation are rapidly developing fields with many new techniques and materials coming to the fore.  I keep regular contact with fellow restorers throughout Britain and Europe as I feel it is important to keep up to date in order to improve and refine my skills.

I undertake the full range of repair and restoration of violins, violas, cellos and viols, many for dealers and professional players.  These range from the more common and frequent repairs required to keep your instrument in good working order, e.g. new bridges, shooting fingerboards, replacing worn pegs and retouching scratches, to more extensive restoration such as sound post patches, neck grafts and crack repair.

Bow rehairing

I carry out the rehairs myself on the premises and although I cannot offer a same day service, bows can usually be collected the following day.  If your bow requires repair or restoration I can arrange the work to be done by a qualified bow maker and restorer.

Setting up & adjustment

Having worked as a teacher and player I understand how important it is to have your instrument set up correctly and performing at its optimum. I work directly with the musician, spending time listening to the instrument before making any considered adjustments.  Only small adjustments can be made at any one time so it may take more than one session to reach the desired sound.


I keep a small stock of strings and accessories.  Please ask if you would like me to stock your favourite string.
